Speed test results
« on: 28 February 2013, 08:43:46 »

We have a new router from O2 that I can't set up until the weekend so things might improve then.

But mean time here are our current results. While the speed is not brilliant, its useable, and is the best available on a bt line round these parts. 5meg is not unusual, but it will return results as low as 1.6 after several quick fire speed tests.

My main question revolves around the little graph on the left. There appears to be a drop in traffic causing a spike as data slows again. This cant be right, can it?

My speed was 5+Mb but that doesnt concern me anymore, the speed it takes to load the basic google homepage these days though is another issue.

Going from dial up to 0.5 Mb ADSL was mega and loading the Google homepage (GHP) was instant, then along came the 1 Mb service and the 2 Mb but each time as the net gets busier the page loading times are getting slower, as said, on 0.5 the GHP took what seemed like Ms to open, now the GHP is taking a second to load and at tea time it seems like 2 to 5 seconds to load.   www.nothappy.com  :-\  technology eh!

That's shockingly slow... even for ADSL, I'm glad I've got a local ISP I'm with on LLU, my ping is <15ms and get a consistent 10-11Mb download

I'd be looking for a different provider if I were you

All things are relative. Given we could only get 1.3 and 1.2 from bt, orange and sky. That's actually quite good. I won't use virgin. So its bt based providers. Which around here means O2. Although i havent checked for a while, o2 had the only Adsl2 equiped exchange.
While other isp's may have adsl2 by now they are not likely to provide a better service on the same line. So not worth the bother.

What ips's say they can provide has absolutely no baring on what we receive at this address. However there's a problem somewhere, going by results. :(

Speed is ok for downloading, but still slow on page loading.  :-\

Ping is pretty meaningless as you could get a low figure over dial-up (as ping packet size is tiny). Its more down to the latency of the many switches/routers it passes through on route.  :y

Those OKLA testers are pretty meaningless, due to inaccuracies, and ISPs playing silly beggers ::)

Not sure if LLU lines can see it, but BT Wholesale's is the most accurate (plus for BT Wholesale services, gives the IP Profile ;)) - www.speedtester.bt.com

PING is meaningless, as ICMP echo and echo-replies usually (virtually always) have the lowest priority on most routers.

To OP, sure there is FTTC in your area. That'll sort the men out from the boys ;)

FTTC is an Openreach system, and thus sold, via BT Wholesale, to any ISP that wants to take it up.

The advantage of FTTC for people who struggle with an ADSL line, is that the DSLAM is much closer, thus reliability (and speed) increases.

Look around your estate for BT green cabinets. Any slightly larger ones nearby with Openreach stickers mentioning Superfast Broadband?

Does that mean Fibre To The Case, or something similar?  i.e. Fibre to the Green thingymajig, and then copper to the property?

If so, I have been quoted speeds of 38Mb down and 10Mb up with this.

I currently receive 20Mb down and 1Mb up on Copper (I'll do the BT speed test thing you suggested when my torrents finish downloading).  I'm about 300m from the exchange!  ;D
