Noticed that my 3.0 doesnt have a hbv and the pipes just go straight into the matrix.
it is a 1996 though so does that make any difference??
will this cause poor heaters or is it only effect the cooling side of the system??

The HBV is only there to reduce heat-soak when you have it on full cold setting.

If you ask me, you're better off without it cos of the number that fail.

Does your car have air-con?

the HBV is there to remove the heated coolant from the heater matrix when the aircon is set to full low.

Apparently there were some Omegas with aircon but without HBV, but I've never seen one - GM actually list the hoses for such cars and they are available.

if you've removed the aircon or it doesn't work and you have no plans to fix it, or indeed if it came from the factory without, then HBV is of no use to you.

yea my car did have aircon but i hav removed it.
dont have to worry about that one then

The HBV is there because the climate control box is so poorly insulated that there is no other way of stopping the heat.

Heat soak is more of an issue if there is no working A/C because there is no cooling available to get rid of the unwanted heat
