Hi all.

I'm trying to restore some Minton floor tiles in my hallway but they are covered in some kind of thick glue. Someone has previously stuck hardboard on them for a laminate floor base.

Has anyone got any ideas how I could remove this without damaging the tiles?

In Spain, I would use acid (hydrochloric) that is sold in every supermarket. It is great stuff but does eat tile grout!

  You do need to ventilate and wear gloves whatever you use. Here is a web link to (i think) an American site so that product may not be available in the UK. http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-remove-carpet-glue-from-flooring/

Might be worth trying some petrol or proper paint brush cleaner. Those tiles will look great. Do a test area somewhere not in main view first.

With a little elbow grease they should shine up as good as good as new, Kate.

It's always worth the effort when original features can be preserved.

That glue is probably the glue used for sticking tiles.....for example Evo-Stik type of product (contact adhesive). When I pulled up our old tiles I used some Evo-stik Adhesive Cleaner, which softens the glue. Not a nice job, as the stuff is cellulose based and you will get high as a kite if you sniff it....use in a well ventilated area.
It did the job for me in my situation

I think the tiles are original to the house as a lot of the houses round here have them.

Research has let us to believe that house was built before 1880 but we can't be 100% sure.

Assisted removing a glued down carpet. Method used was a wall paper steamer which softens the glue and a scraper.

I can't believe someone stood over that gorgeous  floor and thought squirting a load of glue on it was a good thing!

Nitromors should lift it, be carefull though its horrid stuff
