Hellooo, I'm just in the middle of fitting a new bathroom in my daughters new house and she would like the radiator replaced with a ladder type heated towel rail. obviously the pipework will have to be modified to accommodate it, is there any tips re possible pitfalls and installation techniques anyone can give me

Wont find an engineer......might find a technician.

Nothing to it in all honesty Tony, as long as you can solder pipes!

Just one thing in back of my mind - I seem to recall in some old zoned installations, the bathroom rad may be used as a bypass, rather than a dedicated bypass system.

Not that it would make a difference though, unless you put a stat etc on it.

I may be completely wrong though.

my bathroom rad\runs all the time, runs as a pypass

i take off rads for work, when you drain the water make sure both valves are off either side. and undo one side under a bowl then loosen the air valve slowly.whenrenew the rad and you fill up you have to  get the pressure up again from the boiler or it wont run

Only "Combi" boilers have to be re-pressurised of course. If you have the older type system with a "Hot water Tank" just re-fill and bleed system.

N.B Mark I did deliberate long and hard over using the term "engineer" and decided that they fit the criteria of being able to design and build something

Fitted mine a couple of years ago with straight through valves (no TRV's - rad is bypass in circuit) compression fittings will work fine if you don't want to solder

As it's a ladder type towel rail it will be quite high up the wall and hence the one you'll end up bleeding the most after all the others (air rises in system)

Quite the contary, they do nothing more than fit. install and maintain based off a set of guides/instructions.

The design is done up front by the boiler, control system etc manufacturers.

i  fit bathroom suites and kitchens and  take off rads and put back on and refill . just basic pluimbing.same as electrics.i do want to put a shower in here but not too sure how to do it,  i'll probably just fit an electric one

On very old systems  the bathroom rad was sometimes fed from large primary pipes 1"/28mm going to the hot water cylinder on gravity (thermo siphon) so it would work in the summer when the heating was off.But when fully pumped systems became more common this practice was largley dropped, Ive fitted lots of ladder type towel rails ( not my fave job) If youre not sure call in a pro & expect to pay between 60 -100 for labour although some Plumbers are prima donnas who will only supply & fit.
