I thought Cat D was purely a 'financial' thing and therefore it wasn't reported on logbooks?

CAT D doesn't normally go on a log book. CAT C, does  .

How has the dealer found this out Luvvie? Did they do a HPI?

Would they bother on an old car that they'll ship straight out to auction or contacts?

a couple od dealers didnt, but vauxhalls did , carried out my own now to be sure to be sure and there it is

You could try and investigate the circumstances if it was something silly like stolen with keys and not recovered until later

Even if worse, at least you'll know
