Had a Mk1 Carlton once on tickover it rattled like a can of marbles, but when revved noise went as the "whip" of the chain "straightened" it.It never let me down though even though it also used to blow oil out of the air filter!!!

Thought Carltons had a timing belt - one of the loan ones I had whilst mine was in for service ( a 2.0i with 5K miles on clock) certainly did - as the belt broke one morning on starting it up!!  Seem to remember that the LCs had a timing chain though ???
Mk1 Carltons had the cam in head (CIH) engine with a camchain.

Mk2 Carltons (Omega A) had the OHC engine with a cambelt.

IIRC the CIH engine had self adjusting tappets (lifters) operating on short rockers. Setting the preload correctly for the lifters involved running the engine with the rocker cover removed and loosening the adjuster nut on each rocker in turn until it rattled then tightening it by a certain number of turns. A messy job as all the time it was running the cam chain was flinging oil up in the air. I still have the tin guard I made to keep (most) of the oil from escaping.

Certainly all the Carltons I had were company cars - from memory had Mk1 1.8GLi, 2 x Mk2 2.0CDi and 2 x Mk2 3.0GSi.  Guess I never had the need to look that closely - although the loaner which broke a cam belt was a Mk2 2.0i.

The 2.0 had the hydraulic followers, slacken until noisey then tighten on full tunr in 1/4 turn steps.

Never had to many issues with oil mess when a guard was fitted.

Modified oil feed or not, shit servicing will result in wear and noise on any chain driven cam engine......ask a BMW 2.0 diesel owner.....

Agreed Mark. It does have full history tho, serviced every 10k :-\
I don't know for certain it is the chain but can't find an obvious cause of the rattle which sounds a bit like a loose heat shield.

So we now consider 10K mile servicing with oil of uknown vintage and driving of unknown type good servicing..... :y

A lot of us Manta, Ascona and Cavalier mk1 owners got an old rocker cover and just cut the top out. Virtually no oil loss at all  :) We where to young to afford the early Carltons and Viceroys allthough I thought the Viceroy had the 2.5 engine. All so long ago memory not what it once was.

Assuming the oil/filter was ever changed ::)

The '58 Vectra at work was a former Enterprise car, bought through Network Q with full history. It's first actual service was at two years old and 32k, ie as part of the deal for buying it :-X

Ok fair point. I can only go by the service record and assume it's been done.

Trying to get back on track a bit lol

Are these 2.2yh engines noisy by nature?
I'm not convinced its the chain but on the other hand I don't know what it should or shouldn't sound like :-\
