Yeah, it's actually on a well-worn piece of paper hanging on the wall at the local fishmonger's where my parents live.  (Since we're being random and avoiding work on a Monday morning)  :D

I have been self employed for just over 3 years and I survey buildings for disabled access. With the Disabled Discrimination Act coming out I have been very busy, but the last 3 months has died a death for some reason.

I'll tell you why its "Died a death" Pete. I work at a school and someone like yourself came along and did the survey. We were/are not at all disabled friendly (old building) and the work that needed doing to make us so was considerable.
There is, of course, no way we can pay for it from the school budget, so the local authority would have had to foot the bill. They haven't got the money either so asked central government to help out.
They simply said no, do it from your own budget.

So, once again, the government introduce 'legislation' but no money for local authorities to comply.

When it becomes apparent that its a stalemate, everyone conveniently forgets about it, and moves on to the next trendy initiative.

Its not just disabled access by the way, this has happened with asbestos (our school is made from asbestos :() and legionella.

Yep, the good old Government/PC Brigade/Health & Safety Executive!! They take on highly paid jobsworths to sit down and dream up idea's of how they can make life more miserable and expensive for everybody and anyone that doesn't comply because they can't get the necessary funding (like STMO123's school) eventually get shut down! A**HOLES >:(

Rant over ::)

There has to be some common sense applied when doing these surveys. But what most people dont realise is that most people that have disabililties are not born with them they occur later and a disabled person isn't only someone in a wheelchair. The survey should have highlighted things like colour contrasting, handrails, Induction loops and varied seating all of which is not that costly and any other major work could be incorperated when  there is refurbishment. Whenever I visit a School, Community Centre or Youth Club I often get asked is this going to shut use down, but so long as there are plans or a reasonable attempt has been made there should be no problem.

Sorry if I made it sound like the inspectors/surveyors were at fault, Pete. Ours are actually employed by the same local authority that cant afford the improvements. ;D

So, not only do they tell you what work needs doing, they're the ones that tell you that you cant have it done! Doh!

Its just compromise from the word go.

Bob, I realise that it must be a real headache for the private sector. We, as a school, of course, cannot be 'shut down'. The shit only hits the fan when there is an accident, or, when a disabled parent/visitor cannot gain access to certain parts of the building. They sue, and the same LEA that cant afford the improvements, has to afford the compensation. Doh again!
