Due to an 'admin error' before and while I was away on holiday my car tax expired at the end of July.   

The problem is that I've left all my docs in Wales where I've been working for the last few months so can't tax it at the Post Office.  I have taxed it online and I'm now waiting for the disc in the post.

Given that I've paid the tax, but havn't received the disc yet, am I legal to drive?      I'm wondering wherther a 'Tax in Post' note is OK and to be honest I'll only drive locally round here until the disc comes as I don't want any ANPR camera hassles.....

If you've taxed it online, surely the ANPR wouldn't trigger because you're legal.

you shouldn't get any hassles - as far as computer is concerned you are properly licenced

+1 I always print off the DVLA reciept for payment and keep it in the car till the disc shows up,only snag is that the offence is "failure to display" which could be an issue if stopped

The DVLA state this:

"I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 14 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives."

Thanks for the replies, which were kind of along the lines of what I was thinking. 

I was just unsure about Henry's point about failure to display...    I'll print off the receipt, which I'm sure will suffice if I get stopped.

I've been pulled several times in recent years for "no tax" even though I'd taxed it in the week beforehand. The system seems conveniently slow to update itself. Unless your in the wrong then I'm sure it would spot it straight away!

Were the "recent years" before ANPR?

There is an offence of "failure to display", so you could still face problems unless you have a disk stuck to the windscreen. Unlikely to be pulled if the ANPR shows you are taxed, but avoid parking in council car parks and on the street in case you get an over-zealous traffic warden.

I shouldn't worry too much as the tax on my firms van expired at the end of may, iv'e also been through two or three static anpr checks and iv'e heard nothing from the powers that be. when I enquire about the disc I get "its in the post" or its on its way !!

Have highlighted the sticking point

It might be argued that as you applied post expiry, you CANNOT drive the car on the road UNTIL the new tax disc arrives

You have to wait. The only exception is highlighted above, and doesn't apply in this case.

ANPR will show it taxed, but be careful where you park it as an over zealous parking officer will give you a ticket for not displaying.
