Nuisance phone calls
« on: 22 August 2013, 15:39:57 »

Every day we must get 5 or 6 calls, sometimes a number is shown, sometimes not, but the weird thing is no one ever speaks!
I 1471-ed the last number but it was permanently engaged.
What's going on here? I'm beginning to wonder if its some kind of scam where someone somewhere is making money just by me answering the phone.
Bloody annoying!! >:( >:(
Wouldn't be so bad if it was someone trying to flog me something, at least then I could politely tell them where to go  ;D
Anyone else have similar experiences? And how do I stop them ringing ?

Auto-diallers.. Imagine a big call centre full of low paid drones. The machine constantly dials numbers at a pre-determined rate and, when answered, tries to connect the call it just made with an available operator - many are configured far too aggressively and when it tries to find a free operator there isn't one, so you just get an empty line (if you wait long enough a person will probably appear).

Try the TPS but that only protects you (IIRC) from completely unsolicited calls - if the caller got your number from something you signed up for (say, for example, you forgot to check the little 'Don't resell my details' box on your AA membership) then the TPS does nothing for you at all..

Incidentally I've sometimes seen 'call blocking' boxes for sale that go between the phone and the wall - I assume they block all 'unknown' calls and probably a predefined list of known cold-callers..

..I've never been brave enough to try one just in case it blocked something useful (like that time I ignored a call from a number I don't know for a fortnight and it turned out to be the bank telling me I'd forgotten to pay my credit card bill  :-[ :-[ )

We are signed up to TPS and our number is withheld and we don't appear in the phone book. We get very few calls. If we do my wife (answers phone) she demands to know the company and how they got the number in a rather forceful way.  The caller is usually petrified and apologises and goes away. We never hear from the same company twice.

Just checked the TPS site, it appears we are already registered with them. Must ask swmbo when she gets home from work because I haven't heard of them  :-\
Anyway, TPS say they have our number, but I still get calls. What's the next step? Note the numbers that show on my phone and report it?

We leave the answer phone on all the time, if it is someone I want to talk to I will pick up the phone, if they leave a message I will get back to them. Anything else we simply ignore, don't even bother with 1471 :y.

At home we just program all numbers we know into the phone and set a tone for them, anything else just gets a different ring tone. So we answer based on that.

That Truecall thing is more expensive than about a set of 4 cordless phones  :o

I may have this wrong but i think that TPS only applies to UK call centres. :-\

It does, and any international calls will still come through.  Same with the BT "no number given" blocking facility (at a price of about £6.50 per month); Internationally generated calls will still get through. ;)

The next step is to ignore the effin thing if you don't recognise the number. We had this for about three weeks, just after we joined sky ::). I ignored them and they stopped calling.
It helps that my ringtone is a spot of Vivaldi at volume '1'.
