autobox slipping
« on: 28 August 2013, 20:55:54 »

brothers car, 98 3ltr elite m/f

been off the road for two years (builder runs a van a the daily workhorse)
took it for an mot last saturday flew through one advisor rusty disc's
on his way home noticed steam from the drivers side, temp guage reading all ok jumped out to check on lifting the bonnet vapour from the rear of the engine left hand side as viewed from the front and a brownish fluid driping from the rear of the engine block.
after a while got back into the car after checking all fluids were ok, headed to my place no warnings on the mid or dash after about half a mile the car was behaving as a manual would with a sliping clutch just reving very little drive in d or 1 2 3 left to stand a while ran perfect again for half a mile then same fault.
at my place papercliped no faults
code reader on transmission reads fault code p0722 -(4) output speed sensor circuit no  signal - not present.

filter removed cleaned and replaced along with new fluid still same problem, code cleared then when retested p0722 code again

any pearls of wisdom gratefully recieved.

Sure you've got the correct amount of atf in (see maint guides) - symptoms are of low atf ;)

I would say the leak was from the HBV given the location you describe,as for gearbox,as dbug says fluid level :y

after spending the afternoon under the car and folowing mark's guide to the letter still no joy.

same as before after a couple of min's no drive in any gear, it just feels like something has told the box it's in nutural, turn it off give it a second and restart and all is fine as though it has reset it self, then same fault again.

can anyone tell me in plain english what the fault code means,
p0722 -(4) output speed sensor circuit no  signal - not present.

before getting too drastic with gearbox I would try and new GM crank sensor. Replacing atf and filter plus new crank sensor sorted my similar issues 4 years ago.

the output speed sensor is on the tail shaft of the slushbox with a multiplug on it.the chances are that the plug has been broken,i think the boy did this once when he removed his slushbox and forgot to unplug it first.maybe the wires were strained on a previous box removal?
