Hi,
    i currently have a 99 2.5 V6 auto Estate but have been looking at a 2.2 petrol auto facelift which is in

good nick, locally.

Performance is not an issue but is the 2.2 4 pot much better if at all , on fuel than my current car.

Seeing as i do my own maintenance i would think it would be a load easier to work on seeing as it a simple in line four.

The 2.2 isn't always anymore economical, as you tend to strain the engine a little more getting it up to speed.  On long cruises, it is better by around 5mpg though.  It is noticible less refined/smooth than v6 as expected...

I had a 98 2.0 estate before my V6. Fuel difference was not that great. Performance difference is huge

For a big car 2.2 suits me fine although there are others on here that drive nicer and eek out excellent MPG.  For a 4 pot I find it smooth and reliable and have no intentions of changing.

If it's advertised on the net, post some details and you'll get lots of opinions to help you decide.

Don't forget insurance will be cheaper on 2.2 than V6.

The 2.2 is still a good car, though for someone used to 2.5 v6, as original poster is, it will feel underpowered, and less smooth. Economy won't be much better around town...

No offence taken Jaime.  I meant that Tunnie's 2.2 gets 40 MPG+ and don't get me started on his dad's tyres......

I pull a 850KG caravan on occassion and wish I had a 3.0 to ease the hills - but compared to the 306D I used to have it's fab.

I actually find my 2.2 quite powerfull...and im used to the best engine Opel every produced!! Straight 6 CIH..now thats the Daddy!!

The only downside i find with my 2.2 is the standing start....0-60 aint great...but accelerating from say 40/50mph up to 120-ish mph is more than adequate... i agree its a bit 'soft' feeling but overall its powerfull enough!

If its pure performance your after then buy a Ferrari!!

I've driven a 2.2 its quite smooth and not underpowered but as TB said u won't get much differencr in MPG and you will get quite a bit of differenct in power

Mine's much faster now I've stripped out the unneccessary extra weight - wife, kids, car seats, pram, pushchair, handbag etc.... put them all in special Vx mod designed just for the job.. it's called a Meriva.

Against driving this a 2.2 feels soooooo much better  [smiley=wink.gif]

i find the 2.2 quite quick in manual form, in auto it is a bit dull....

I had a 2.5 V6 Auto for a while, and have to say the enging was much smoother and made a nicer sound.

It just does things easier than the 2.2, however i did not find it noticably slower.

I drove the 2.5 Auto for about a week, driving it every day, and ragging it a bit as it was a project car and i was not intending on keeping it. When i jumped back into my 2.2 i thought... humm here we go its gunna be slow and i am gunna want a V6.

I was very suprised, the 2.2 still felt liveley and quick. Ever since i cleaned the breathers, and put a new exhaust one it really has made things better.

Make sure the breather pipes are clean, espcially that tiny little one on the drivers side, clean that and boy does it make a differnce!

Only joking Mark - there's nothing wrong with your 2.2, and its ideal for your current needs

V6 is MUCH better for towing and mine is cheaper to run than a 2.2

Only joking Mark - there's nothing wrong with your 2.2, and its ideal for your current needs

sure is at the moment i am only using it about once a month!  

Do a big shopping do at tesco once a month, stock up on all that beer   then thats it, unless i go home then it gets used.

Took it to uni once, never again!!! parking is impossible and we are expected to pay £60 for the privilage to "hunt" for a space, a gaurenteed space costs £130!!!

So i bike in, much healthier, but can be deadly.

Must admit i would like a V6 next, the 2.2 does the job fine....
