Yeah modern technology hasn't reached Bury the a North yet, has it? ;D

It must have ......... my TomTom directs me where I want it to without driving up local garden paths  ;) ;) ;)

The last mile to Newent is a bit tricky, so fair do's. Bit excessive for one journey though. :P

I failed the first time going to Newent, but that was pre TomTom and using CARiN. Daz & CapnZok came to the town centre to guide me in ........ so to speak!  ???  :y

895 was last October, so not too far out-of-date, should work reasonably well.. :(

Not sure I'd ever trust a satnav where the *disc* gets lost  ;D

For the job I expect of it, TomTom is fine for me, with the advantage that you can take it and all your favourites to any car and no messing about with CDs that get lost and readers with dodgy lasers.

Can't recall any time it has sent me up the garden path with recent maps and the GPS receivers are so good these days that there isn't a need for it to be built-in with speed signal input, etc.

Totally agree, plus it can easily be updated - both data (maps) and Operating System - via the internet at zero cost, and personal preferences, points of interest etc, can be added, which cannot be said for built-in CD driven devices.

Bear in mind Chris uses TT for iPhone. Mind you, I use it and so do all of my lads and it is superb. Full live traffic and perfect directions 98% of the time :y

Still prefer my NCDC, it works where my Tom Tom doesn't (Heat reflective windscreen) and as no modern Tom Tom's have an external antenna input I'm stuck with an ancient Go model!

The Laser issue can be fixed, I've done a few now!

I would still buy an up to date Tom Tom if I could buy a fixed active dock with external antenna connection.......

I'm still using an old TomTom One. Put the latest maps and firmware on it and it's fine, and it has an antenna connector.

Oh, and I forgot to mention LPG POIs. Couldn't live without those.

Yes there's no adding poi's to ncdc navs, obviously.

And appologies. I should have said the Tomtom is iPhone based. Twice the trouble probably. ;)

Something weird with your settings I think Chris .. my house to Reading Station, my phone (TomTom) takes me up the A329 all the way to the A4, into the middle of town (more or less), under the railway bridge and to the station North car park.. no detours needed.

Having said that my map version now is 915.5112, but I've been using it for at least a year or more without problems. Don't tend to use it now to find the station but did the first couple of times..

For a decent free alternative I've been using Waze recently, quite nice if you ignore the 'social' features.

My issues with TT are the dreadful routes it picks, and the fact it is utterly hopeless in built up or wooded areas. In fact so hopeless, its a hinderence.

I actually still have an old iPAQ that runs an old version with fairly old maps, and because it has an external antenna, is a million times better than the all-in-one ones that everyone sticks to their windscreen. This remains my weapon of choice for when I have to use a non proper satnav. Routes presented still suck though.
