Scary steering wheel wobble at speed
« on: 14 November 2013, 23:25:34 »

Hello again

I took the car to Newcastle and back without a problem at all on saturday and the car was so comfortable and was running perfectly.

But I've been on the motorway again and when I'm at speed (60-80) the steering wheel seems to violently shake and wobble. This isn't noticeable when I'm driving around town but it is scary. This has never happened before.

Looking on google it says something about the brake disks being warped, but the brakes work fine, but one thing I've noticed though is that when I set off there does seem to be a whine coming from the brakes, a sort of screeching sound from cold, but I just assume that its the handbrake sticking.

Where is the first place I should start to look at, I do get tremendous knocking sounds when going over potholes or bumps but I put that down to the cars age.

But the steering wheel wobble is really worrying me now and I need to use the car on the motorway for open days.

Help!
Thank you

Wishbone bushes fubar.

Rattle is most likely drop links. Although if the bushes are well gone, then the wishbone could be knocking on the subframe. Believe it or not.

Should add some caution.... usually buggered wishbone bushes cause a random wobble. It's not usually quite so cirtian it will happen under a given speed or load. Bumps or steering movement can set it off, as basically, the wheel/hub/shock and wishbone are flapping about. That feeds back through the steering.

Can't hurt to check steering idler too.

well it did pass its last mot with it it seems to have completely gone now.

-Advisory Notice issued
Rear both sides coil spring corroded (2.4.C.1b)
Front both sides Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
Oil leak
Engine light on,offside front door strap insecure, under body and suspension slightly rusty.

How expensive is this to fix and what is involved?

Is it something that I can forget and is it safe to continue driving with it?

Chris says something about the wishbone knocking on the subframe, but what exactly is a wishbone? Is it part of the suspension?

Thanks for the quick help guys :)

*The MOT is in April by the way so if its not serious can I leave it until then?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-OMEGA-WISHBONE-SUSPENSION-ARMS-NEW-PAIR-/250214423910

Only £45 for the part. Any idea on the labour?

This car is giving me a massive headache! Is it safe for now to continue to drive with it until April when the MOT runs out? I think the car has come to the end of its functioning life and there are so many things wrong with it and with its low spec I don't think it would be worth continuing or saving it.

Budget an hour per side, plus a full geometry set up at Wheels in Motion :y

Nothing on that list is worth scrapping it for :y

Back to basics check if you have lost any balance weights, then wheels for security and are they true. :y

Yep if the vibration is between 60 and 80 i'd say the wheels our out of balance.

Obviously the front wishbones / bushes need replacing according to the MOT as well  :y

Got to agree with Al on this one, if I thought about it every time something went wrong with my cars then there would be 4 more Omegas that would be up in the big Omega scrapyard in the sky.You don't indicate where you are in the UK,but there are members on here that undertake the type of repairs that you need to keep your car on the road. :y

It's all in the description. A wobble is very different to a vibration. Plus if an mot tester has even noticed a bush failed, it's guaranteed the bush is absolutely bollarded.
