That, the Silverstone Classic, Le Mans Classic, Spa Classic etc..

Let's face it, race cars haven't been very pretty since the 70s..

That reminds me. I want to go this year and apparently ticket sales have opened. Anyone for a road trip?

There was going to be a kit car tour ending there (and still may be) but that's a bit up in the air at the moment, so I'm formulating my own plans in parallel.

My thoughts are to stay here:

http://en.chateau-de-chanteloup.com/

It's about 20 minutes' drive from the circuit but it's pretty, clean, has a decent bar and restaurant, hot showers, toilets that flush, grass to pitch your tent on, and so on. You can camp in the thick of it at the circuit, but you'll find none of the above there. Given that Mrs. KW will be coming, camping at the track is going to end badly if I try it. ;)

The owner is a bit of a petrol head, so is happy for car clubs to camp there and, indeed, for the main Le Mans 24h it's full of like minded nutters, without the stag do's p*ssheads and other rubbish that has invaded the track camp sites. Not sure what the classic is like, as I've never been.

In the past I've done the fast cat from Portsmouth to Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo as it's then a leisurely afternoon's drive to le Mans (100 miles ish) with some slack to allow a more scenic route hacking around the "D" roads. The crossing to Calais is cheaper but then it's 120 miles to Dover, 260 to Le mans and all boring motorway.

There's also the option of a slow overnight boat to St malo with a bar.

Could do a long weekend out and back or a little more of a tour with a couple of additional overnight stops.. Whatever suits.

Costs look to be as follows, based on the following...

Brittany ferries Pompey to St Malo, out on 2/7, arriving 3/7 with the return being 8/7, arriving 9/7, one car (no trailer/roofrack), three people and an outside cabin...

Kevins' suggested campsite from 3/7-8/7...

And a full ticket for the race weekend, 4/7-7/7.

Ferry is £533 return, including cabin both ways.

Campsite is €100.

Race weekend is €53 per person.

The summer OOF meet perhaps?  Certainly a weekend well spent 8)

And no midgies/rain either...

Regarding the race ticket, that looks like the general entry ticket. Parking would need to be added to that (but we could probably make do with less than one space each) and if you want a grandstand seat that's extra.

Ferry has romped up in price a bit. :o Fast cat was cheaper though, I believe.

I don't know how it compares with the main Le Mans race, but there are grass banks to sit on if you just have the GE ticket, and plenty of restaurants and bars to take a break. The last few times I went, the grandstands were the ONLY place that you could find any shade, though (and it was 34C in the shade!). I'm hoping the classic will be a little quieter.

Pompey to Le Harve is £323 on the same basis...
Dover to Calais/Dunkirk is £70, and makes it a bit more of a road trip 8)

Yeah, open to that option too, if we're going to break the trip up a little.

Let's go. Now.

Ok, bit early. ❄️ Maybe wait until the spring? ⛅️

But last road trip we had wonky donkeys. Absolutely brilliant fun and essential for group driving for safety and easy communication between cars.  Must have. Ask Santa. 😉

Where's the fun in that? First time we went it was me and 2 mates. One map, one mobile phone and one fuel can. Never have 2 of the above in any one car, and the map can't be in the lead car, or in any car where the driver can actually navigate. ::) Oh, and the guy with the smallest fuel tank (me!) has to be tail end charlie. That was a bundle of laughs. ;D

I vowed never to go to Rouen again. Must have driven round the stinking place about a dozen times. >:(

Ah dear old Rouen, its a frigging nightmare since they destroyed the old bridge, and didnt bother blocking the road off,  just a few cones to stop you ending up in the drink! lovely at night when i drive through there, not!! if there was another way round i would take it evrytime but its not damned feasable on the route  prefer through france,(always avoid the paris route for obvious reasons :-X
