[Gaffers]

Anybody have experience of installing one of these?  I am considering it for the side of the house but I am not sure about planning permission etc.  They look pretty straight-forward to do and I have a spotty trainee surveyor/CAD expert living with me for the next few weeks so I would like to utilise his expertise if I can

Advice anyone?

As long as its not forwarded of the original building line, open on at least two sides and less than 30m² then no building or planning permission required.

Get your welder out, order some steel stock and knock one up.

I was thinking wood. I like wood.

Steel supporting poles (old scaffolding poles are ideal) and then a wooden roof is a good combination, where if you use wooden support posts they will rot at the ground surface and snap after a few years. 

Very easy to build and they do make a big difference in keeping the bird crap off your car.

They do tend to look a bit of an eye sore though ... especially made out of old scaf poles

Having said that I'd love one here - over the complete drive; but that would make it hard up against the house, dividing fence and garage, and that probably counts as 'enclosed on three sides'. Boo. Also one corner would have to levitate otherwise I'd never get in past the 4x4 from next door that's always half way across my drive

I thought the rules had been relaxed to the point that you can build a " non permanent structure" i.e without foundations as long as it was not up to your boundary.??

yes something like their cantilever carports, but in wood as budget wont spring to their prices.  DIY is the only option.
