Rear Wheel Bearing
« on: 23 January 2014, 13:42:43 »

My 2000 3.0 estate needs a rear wheel bearing.

Is this a big job? How many hours would it take a garage?

Where is the best place to buy the parts?

Thanks a lot. :y

I rang a local garage and they quoted £209 for the job.

Would this be a fair price do you think?

I believe they're ~£50 on Trade (or Trade Club) from Vx, somewhere in that region.. as for how hard the job is, ask me again in a few weeks ;D

I'm sure I've also read that people have had non-genuine bearings fail within a few hundred miles (Entwood, maybe?)..

The mechanic told me it was a 3 hour job.

The mechanic told me it was a 3 hour job.

3 hours with the car on axle stands in the street.
But the quote you have is pretty reasonable.

Ah .. well I was half right! Rear non-genuine OK then as long as it's a decent make (SKF etc)?

This would be an MOT fail wouldn't it?

Fail if there's play in it, or it's very noisy.
Advisory if it's just rumbling.
Eurocarparts list SKF rears for about £35, or a cheaper one at £25ish, which isn't a big enough saving to recommend.

Mr Sassenach (Trowbridge) did one of mine in 40 minutes flat .. and that included looking for, then making, a bit of his "special tools" that he couldn't find... mind you .. his bearing puller had to be seen to be believed !!

Mine is rough and ready, as it was cobbled together in 15mins, out of scrap , on the car.

I wonder if it's worth making a better finished one for OOF use?

Do you have any idea how much he would charge?
