Head Gasket
« on: 06 June 2008, 20:27:34 »

What are the common signs of my head gasket on my Vauxhall Veccy blowing, at the moment i have water in the oil and when i start it up, it has blue smoke for 1-2 seconds, what do you think and what should i look out for.

So far i have absoloute no smoke coming out the engine, the things i have mentioned is all that has happaned.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jamie :y

oil in water usually a good sign that hg has failed. had this on my vw van a couple of years ago. could also check for mayo like substance on th eunderside of oil filler cap.

The only time I have had a head gasket go was a long time ago, one of the main symptoms was white smoke / steam coming from the exaust.

If the HG fails and coolant leak into the cylinder (on the induction cycle), you will have a nice thick cloud of white smoke and strong smell of Ethylene Glycol... had this on my Alfa (twice...) many years ago.

Mind you, not all HG failures result in coolant getting into the cylinders. It depends on where the gasket failed.

compression test is a good start,

some signs -, excesive pressure in expansion tank and a smell of fuel, mayo as described,
exsecive white smoke and water from exhaust,
poor heating inside , over heating- engine,
poor performance,

if its still running okish now its worth taking head off and replacing hg, and hopefully get away with out it needing a skim??

I do have that but have no over heated engine, performance is still top notch and heating is fine aswell, well so far anyway, see how it goes :y

Thanks

Well i have good news, i got in contact with the seller i bought it off and he had replaced the engine due to the head gasket going and turned out he didnt some of the components.

Turns out that blue smoke is because it just isnt getting used.

Still for sale by the way, pm me for details :y
