It came back today so managed to get it into a local garage before it stopped and they came up with the diagnosis of top strut bearings too.You could feel the creak on the top of the strut.

Been quoted £125 per side for non genuine bearing and top rubber. Does this sound reasonable? I think both sides will need doing tbh so its not cheap overall.

The bearing they found including the rubber was £70. Vauxhall has the bearing for £27 but the rubber was £108 on its own. Do I need to change both or is it just a matter of seeing how bad the original rubbers are?

All German list Lemforder bearing and top for £27 a side.
I fitted new Febi tops to mine 2 years ago for about the same, and cleaned and regreased the bearings. Now, I'd just buy those.
You'll probably need a geometry check after this work, depending on how it's done.

If you want to preserve the camber setting (which you do) I'd suggest removing the shock with the steering knuckle/hub/stub axle attached.

It means separating the wishbone ball joint though, so might cost more.

Top mount rubber isn't known to fail, so you might get away with just the bearings. Is it worth having some good used top rubber mounts on stand by?

Poly bushes are potentially available for the top mounts, but this is as yet untested... can't see them not creaking though ::)
