rounded torx bolt
« on: 14 June 2014, 19:23:36 »

hi, in my attempt to fix the common"clunk" through the steering on my vec b due to the torx bolts needing replaced and re-torqued perfectly i have taken the head right of the bottom bolt whiltst trying to get it out, totally rounded it. i have managed to get a hack saw and cut a deep groove in it for a screw driver but its still very tight and dont want to bugger the bolt any more than i allready have, would applying abit of heat to it help as there will be lock tite on there aswell ?

thanks

Yes but make sure you put enough weld on to hold the nut as the bolt will be tight, if not enough weld it will come off :y

Ok, is it worth trying my original idea first with heating the bolt to melt the loctite then trying the screwdriver in the groove i made ?

If you've already cut a groove in it for your screwdriver then I would apply some heat to it before mucking about with weld. Also, use a screwdriver bit on a torque wrench or breaker bar, will be easier to shift after heat. I had the exact same problem when removing the seats from my MV6. Heat worked a treat. Neat.

Failing that. Drill the head off and replace the bolt, if all else fails.

Tried heating and using the screw driver bit on wrench with no joy. Also tried screwdriver. Keeps coming away from the bolt . Its very tight. Next thing will be seing who can weld. Would garages feel confident in welding a bolt down in the footwell ?

spoke to a guy the day, he can do it but its one of them "time consuming" tasks -  drivers seat out, carpet pulled back, trims of etc

Have you tried an impact screw driver and they when whacked with big hammer produce plenty of force to shock them into undoing. :y

you might be able to hammer on a slightly smaller ordinary socket on the Torx head & use the impact driver  :-\

tried that mate but theres bugger all left on the head to get a grip off, its all rounded away. the car had a new steering rack fitting around 3 years ago and when they tightened the bolt they seem to have made an arse off it ! ive only noticed after the "clunk" starting to re-appear. looking at easy out kits on ebay just now but doubt they will be much use
