I'm not sure I understand the sense in crash testing vehicles at 60 MPH. Hit something solid at that speed and it won't be survivable no matter what angle the car is at.

If you could engineer a car rigid enough to retain its' structure under such duress the human body inside would be subjected to G forces that would cause fatal injury anyway.

Much like the test 5th Gear did years ago with the Smart car - 70mph into a concrete barrier at a 45º angle.. the car was fine (well, the superstructure was - the plastic disintegrated), but stopped so fast that the internal organs of any occupant would be mush..

Who would have thought that any of those cars would have turned out to be rubbish?

I particularly like the Metro Rover 100, where the airbag deployed but by the time the driver's head came anywhere near it the steering column had moved sideways so he still clouted the rim of the steering wheel.

A friend of mine lost his life to a HGV accident. In fact, I think there were 3 cars in front of the lorry in which nobody survived.

Worrying as that is, what do you honestly expect from a small car made from tin foil

The question you should be asking is do Smart crash test the ForTwo on its back for secondary impact survival

At the end of the day, the only way to be perfectly safe would be to buy a tank, and clearly that might be a bit more of a compromise than a small hatchback...
