Ripped off what would you do?
« on: 24 June 2008, 19:32:30 »

Hi all. I have a problem. I purchased some bits from a fellow member on here and he's done a runner with the money. Now were not talking hundreds here but I find the principal of matter more upsetting. I'm a member of 2 other car forums. One is restricted access while the other is a open forum. I've purchased parts on both of these from members with good feed back with no issues. It saddens me to think somebody doesn't buy in to the spirit of the site. So what would you do? Do I name and shame them? after all I've got nothing to loose the moneys gone anyway and it might just stop somebody else getting coined. Do I keep pestering them with Pm's not really my style I like to think If somebody sent me one pm I'd ac immediately I read it. Just accept it's buyer beware and not trust anybody. Which I think is sad. I have contacted the admin on here but I doubt there is much they can do. This kind of thing puts a real downer on the forum community as a whole and makes it a unpleasant experience I mean are you going to want to log on to a site where you feel undesirable people frequent?

If I've gone against forum rules with this I do apologise I should of checked first.

I personally think after a fortnight's waiting you should be allowed to name and shame.  There are no doubt people who pray on car owners on forums and it's the only way I can see that it can be stopped (along with the post count rule).

If people don't answer their pm's you've got to be instantly suspicious, mabye making email compulsory for sellers would be another idea.  We've heard all the excuses - my internets down etc but mabye if you've had a confirmed sale then a valid mobile number would also be an idea, so there is no debate.

I think if someone has conned you on here, and that person is still a member, then he or she should be named and their membership revoked otherwise others could be conned in the same way.

Sorry your having problems  :(

When was this member last logged on? easy to check.....
If not been logged on then he wouldnt have got your PM....

Has it been two weeks as rickyboy says?

Could be on holiday?

How did you pay? paypal or sent a cheque? if the later has it been cashed?

Personally i would give it 3 weeks ..... then theres an area on the site that i think admins can post an 'avoid trading with' probably in the bits for sale section......dunno not looked  ::)

Trading disputes are, sadly, not an untrodden path on OOF or elsewhere.

If anyone cares to look on the parts for sale section then take a read of the sticky at the top - warning, read before buying/selling - then those in dispute will be seen as will the status of the dispute.

If a seller were to be banned from accessing the site then that will also close any potential path that could be used to resolve the matter.

As stated, admin are aware and have done what they can to instigate a resolution in the case in question in this thread.

Bottom line is, sadly, there are persons about who abuse whatever position of trust that is gained, most of the time by others, and as a result, spoils things for the remainder....

Seriously .. send details to an Admin by PM. There is a "name & shame" thread in the stickies of the sales board that an Adminer can put the names up if the problem is not resolved.....  its always worth a peep at before agreeing to buy/sell ....

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1209069730

Don't do anything half-cocked .. go through the correct procedure and the Admin staff may well be able to help... thay have in the past

Doz - you will be able to see if your sent PM's have been read or not.  As TD has said, 2 or 3 weeks is not unusual to be away from the forum but I also note, in your particular circumstances, that the seller has managed to respond to posts in the interim, or do I read it wrong??

I do appologise (on behalf of genuine members on here) for the  unacceptable experiance you have suffered. I am sure that if you make your concerns known to the Admin team they could revoke the and ban the member that is involved. I am sure that the admin team will make this known to other members to be aware of the member concerned.

Doz,

If your dispute is the one registered within the Buyers beware section then bear with the buyer. He has sent me stuff before and does deliver. It took him a little while to get it posted but it all arrived in the condition expected and very quickly once shipped. I'll be surprised if he doesn't come through for you but...

Just my thoughts on it.

P.S. I'm just about to order another couple of things from him too!!!

The Admin and members on this forum do thier very best to try and avoid this sort of situation.

All I can do is echo the points above, Give it at least a month, keep Admin advised, and if nothing comes of it then the Admin will put them on the shame list.

In the mean time, if you have paid via paypal, then raise a dispute to claim your money back.

Sadly as we find, there is allways one who spoils it for others.

Hope it gets sorted matey

Is there not a case for going back to "old technology" ?. If you don't use online methods like paypal, but stick to sending a cheque to an address, then if it doesn't arrive you have a case against the person. You also have a pretty good method of contacting him/her as you know the address the money was sent to. The whole trouble with paypal is the anonimity of the net, people can so easily hide their true identies and locations, and the police haven't got the time to investigate small claims. In the case of paypal, just because millions of people use it doesn't mean its safe, unfortunately.
