Some folk ride very high horses

Often as a result of bitter experiences, such as the loss of loved ones in car accidents...

Re your signature - its not speed that kills - its the misuse of speed that is dangerous.  I have driven high performance cars both on the road and on the race track at high speeds (remember when there was no speed limit in the uk?) safely.  It can be lethal to drive at 30mph in the wrong conditions!

Whilst I agree with you ... I cannot for the life of me think of any way that driving at 120mph on a public highway can be classed as anything other than "the misuse of speed", especially when concentrating on racing the car in front and NOT therefore on what else is going on.

When there was no speed limit in the UK there were much much fewer cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and those cars that could do "high speed" were very few and far between. It is a totally abstract and futile comparison

Agree for the most - but ultimately when you crash, the severity, injuries and likelyhood of death all increase when the speed of impact is increased. Therefore, speed kills :y

An old cliche, but its still the sudden stop that causes the problem, not the speed on its own.

Why crash - inappropriate use of speed with regards to road conditions maybe?
High speed impacts - Top Gears "hamster" survived.  I also know a guy who barrel rolled some years back at the Pod at in excess of 180mph - broke a lot of bones but survived.

I don't condone misuse of speed on either the roads or the race track - agree the harder the impact the bigger the risk of injury or worse - but ultimatelt it in not speed per se that kills.  I have seen people killed in relatively low speed impacts.

I think i will agree to disagree with your view.

[edit]Reference Entwoods comments about racing at 120mph on the roads - couldn't agree more - that is moronic and stupid.  Racing should be undertaken by sane individuals on a race track.
By the way referring to the lack of uk speed limits was not meant as a "comparison", rather to demonstrate that one could drive at high speeds in the right conditions legally then.[/edit]

Dont forget that we are cocooned and relatively safe... Peter Pedestraian or Charlie Cyclist is not so lucky!  :(

Over the years the one thing I have learnt is do not assume anything. The road could be fantastic, I have driven/ridden some roads which could safely be taken at silly speeds, I have also driven substantially below the number on a stick as I considered it to be safer at a lower speed.

Rule 1 never assume

I think everyone has done this at sometime or other being fair..... speeding i mean....
I would bet that most of us have done the speed we are talking about on the motorway, knowing full well if the police caught us we could end up behind bars.

I know the road in question & given my occupation am very aware of hazard perception. I used to ride bikes, many on here still do & have posted how quick they are as have many posted how quick their Migs are. Some post how mpg drops when they boot it, i could go on. Some patrol car officers admit they enjoy thier job,top speeds, 3.0 auto vs 2.5 man races have been posted. We know none of these were track days so why has this post been jumped on?

Agreed I certainly have.

However I do not race other motorists on the roads.  Having raced on the track I know just how much concentration needed to compete with other drivers - vision tends to become a bit more "tunnel" than normal - this is a dangerous situation on a public road when most of the concentration is on racing and not on peripheral items such as other traffic!  A recipe for disaster.

I think i will agree to disagree with your view.

To be honest I'm not sure why this is even being discussed. Speed limits are there for a reason and nobody should be trying to justify why it's OK to break them.

Not justifying that its ok to break speed limits :-? Agreed speed limits are there for a reason, usually, but not always, a good one.

TBH I'm not sure I got my point across too well.

I agree that it's more inappropriate use of speed than speed itself that is the problem.

The point I was trying to make was IF you have an accident at a higher speed, the consequences, hence risks, are increased compared to a lower speed. I wasn't trying to say that speed would CAUSE the accident.

Does that make sense?  ::)

This is something I'm really sensitive about, I lost a 19 year old friend who was in a car accident not too long ago  :'(

There is an extreme difference betwen the occasional high speed burst on a motorway, and bragging about racing at 120 mph on a "normal" road ... with the thread entitled "ha ha ha Omega scares crap out of Audi owner...... "

The purpose appears to be to speed, intimidate, and show off.

IMHO shows a callous disregard for other people and a total lack of responsibility.

Sympathies with the loss of your friend James & i don't condone inappropriate driving, but given the amount of similar posts that were welcomed in the past i don't understand why Max is being strung up for posting nothing new. I've attended funerals of 2 friends who went young, watched thier parents grieving & welled up myself. It's awfull i know but Max must be feeling very outcast at the moment.
I'm sure he meant no wrong.

I am personally friends with Max and I can vouch he has always been a nice guy.

I don't feel that he's being strung up though - my perception is that we're just having an amicable debate about use of speed?

Sorry about the loss of your friend & yes that does now make sense.

Cant beat a good debate - signing off for the night now as some work to do.
