My wife is the head teacher of a church of england school where about 80% of the pupils are muslim (yes, I know  :o). They all celebrated christmas, parents (mostly) included. And when it is eid, they'll all do that too.

Listening to an interview on Radio 4 this morning. Some (ordinary) muslims condemn the violence but in the same breath say the cartoonists should not have made or be allowed to make fun of Islam. This ambivalence is problematic.

I listened to that, and agree. Read David Aaronovitch in yesterday's Times. It sums the situation up very well.  :y

If Dave Allen, Jim Davison and their ilk are tolerated, then why not satirical cartoons :-\

Or satirical posts about cyclists?

What is the solution? Clearly crusades/shooting people/ousting regimes and trying to force democracy don't work...

If the Christian church were stronger/more forward thinking then perhaps Islam wouldn't be the fastest growing religion amongst western populations.

Perhaps all religion could be outlawed? Or perhaps all faiths combined to form a global, all encompassing church :-\

People can be of faith regardless of their situation, does religion have to have labels :-\

It's just down the road from here now, kosher supermarket with hostages and several dead.

Strangly enought though, after a few tours in Afghan/Iraq I don't feel that anxious about it tbh :-\

You certainly chose an 'interesting' week to be in Paris rather than Lyon :-\

I'm sure the Israelis won't stand for it for long...

The problem is the human condition.. so there is no solution; not until we accidentally erase ourselves as a species, anyway (it's only a matter of time, surely!)

Apparently the events in Paris have already been reason enough for tougher security checks at some airports (certainly in Spain as someone returning from there found, yesterday) and calls in some countries for de-facto monitoring of all communications and the introduction of a "Patriot Act" style thing..

The Patriot Act is a dangerous path to follow...
