It was a matter of months ago, I bought one. Strange. Also infuriating if this is the case!!!

Hoping that this is just an example of a dealer can't be bothered. Has happened before on several parts.

I've found that these are almost always torn every time you remove the breather bridge - I appreciate that cleaning the breathers isn't exactly a weekly routine, bu nevertheless it's a consumable part, just like tyres, oil, whatever. I can sort of appreciate things like diff V-bushes which split after 200k not being made anymore, there isn't the demand, as such, but these things are pretty much worth replacing every time you do the breathers, especially given their sub-£2 cost. I know plenty of OOFers get half a dozen, just because it's not worth the drive just for a £2 part. Wish I'd got some, now!

Darth - everyone is about to become your best friend, if you have some!  :)

Really? Oooh, when I did the breathers on my old man's years ago, that was in pieces. When I came to re-do it recently (same car, now in my hands) that was split again. Bought a later long plenum off here a few months back, and that one was split, too. So in my experience that's nothing but broken ones. Either I've been unlucky, or you're lucky.. ah well, I suspect the former!  :y

Might be an age / heat thing. I usually find they have a light coat of oil on that keeps them soft, same as the O rings on the breather bridge.

I think (it's my theory) that if you undo the central stud under the 'ECOTEC' cover, then prise the breather bridge upward and off pivoting where the two in/outlets meet the throttle body, this is where excess pressure pulls and splits the seal. It is, of course, the wrong way to remove the breather bridge, and you risk snapping the end off one of the plastic tubes at the throttle body (like mine is  ::)) as well. Must most likely bad practice employed in the cars' pasts...  :(
