You say timing is spot on. I just mention that on my last 24 valve performance was getting worse over months, I finally traced the fault to the crank sensor reluctor ring having moved on the crankshaft. On the Senator the reluctor ring is on the end of the crankshaft, sharing a Woodruff key with the cam chain sprocket and I think the oil pump gear. Anyway. what happened was that someone had changed the cam chain, damaged the Woodruff key so that the reluctor ring, on the outer ring could move, and was doing so. Sadly, I failed to remove the nut, despite using heat and a large impact wrench, so scrapped the car.

You car is a 12 valve, so the duplex chain presumably has not been touched.

had to sort a carlton 12v few years ago, sounded like a bag of spanners, backfiring up the inlet, ran but only just, anyway after a fairly involved few hours, found the timing chain guide had broken, allowing timing to fluctuate, this allowed the hydraulic tensioner to expand to far as it tried to compensate,so oil pressure was low, polished the crank new big ends and mains i could get to :-X new tensioner, broken part was in the sump,it had just snapped, mileage was 86k?
