Clonking type sound coming from the rear...
« on: 19 May 2015, 15:53:55 »

It can't be the exhaust I have triple checked everything is secure, The shocks are around a year old along with the springs so can't be them all good quality parts, Everything in the boot is secure what little there is in there.

Here's a short clip which does pick up some of the sound I'm on about on rough surface roads.

I'm not sure what else it could be tbh  :-\

Hmm, that is quite difficult to diagnose from afar. I presume you've been in the back of the car with the seats down whilst someone else is driving? The reason I ask is to rule out interior trim.

Top mounts
Drive shafts (IE CV Joints)
ARB Drop links
ARB Bushes
Wishbone bushes
Heat shield
Lose fuel filter

There are so many things it could be, the best way to find it is to jack the rear up and then have a pry around. With the exhaust, normally, I just stick my foot on the tail pipe and give it a good push/kick/rattle around to see if I can hear anything.

I haven't tried/checked the highlighted as of yet  :y, But visual everything seems fine underneath. Just need to try and eliminate things  :-\

Sachs springs bought around July last year, Also passed an MOT a few days ago. Did also inspected the springs myself mind and they are intact.

As the noise occurs when on suspension travel, could you stand in the boot and jump up and down? Not to replicate the fault, but to entertain your neighbours  :D

Seriously, if it makes the noise stationary, then it's got to be suspension pretty much.

Tried something similar... ::) opened the boot lid an push up and down lightly and firmly by arms and then by sitting up and down.. Not a peep completely silent. Rear suspension is a little on the firm side possibly with bilstein shocks but don't see that causing this issue  :-\

I'm gonna go with......Shock mount.

Could be anything though tbh. But it is in relation to small stutter bumps, not something you can re create with a shove on the rear.

I'll have rear subframe bushes.

That's what's causing mine to clonk like a four letter word.

Jack the car up and wiggle the shock body where it meets the dust cover... any play and replace the topmounts using the following parts:

90447244 Cup x 4 £2.40 (washer, four required)
90250288 Rubber Bumper x 2 £3.97 (top mount upper rubber, two required)
90447245 Insulation x 2 £3.14 (top mount lower rubber, two required)
90447246 Spacer Sleeve x 2 £2.49 (fits inside top mount lower rubber, two required)
