My understanding is that the reason that Win 10 is being called the last Windows OS is that during Win 10's life they are going over to a totally based cloud system and like Photoshop you will have to rent it with a monthly fee but updates / upgrades will happen automatically.

This is great for shareholders where you will pay £100's to £1000's in rent every year, but not for people like me who refuse to rent / lease things where it normally works out far more expensive than buying.
Its not really possible to move the client into the cloud (you can move their desktop experience though), as the thin clients required to run at a decent speed aren't that "thin". The thin client OS needs maintenance.

I suspect MS will be going more towards a constant update system for the client/desktop, as has been trialled with Win8 with the 2 big feature updates, including Win8.1.

Its the VB IDE that's the problem. The IDE is too buggy in Win7, so have to maintain a XP VM just for this :(

Yes, tell me about it. I inherited a project in VB6 a couple of years ago (never actually developed anything in VB6 myself). Every time I think it's finally dead, some daft git quotes a customer for it. ::)

This has a snowball's chance in hell of even running under Windows 7, since it makes extensive use of bits of the disk and registry that it shouldn't. :(

In my bro's case, I have a GPO frig the registry to overcome the Vista+ enforcements of abusing the registry  :-[

Ok....let me be the first noob to ask this...
I have had the notification from Microsoft, and reserved my upgrade. When this happens, how does it work. What about all my e-mails, documents, and especially stuff that relies on registry entries. Will it just overwrite certain bits, and carry on as normal or will I have to load programmes back in.

Please let the answers soothe my troubled brow. ;)

Oh...and I have 3 computers running 7, will I get notification for all three ?

Win10, when its officially released (supposedly later this year, more like early 2016), should be similar to a mix of Win7 and 8 but with the missing Start Menu back again, so you should be able to run all the Windows Programs kicking around plus all the Win Apps from the MS Store.

Having said that Ive been running Win10 for a while now (Beta Test Version) and whilst its pretty good, its still very buggy, especially on existing Drivers etc, a long way to go yet, before its finished, but there under pressure to get it released in some form or another.  ::)

Will be a totally fresh Install that will overwrite your existing OS and keep (Try to) your existing programs , probably with a Roll Back feature to your existing OS (there be silly not to put that in).

Personally, assuming you have enough Disk Space kicking around, I would backup / clone your existing OS Drive(s) and run with a Dual Boot for a while until you feel comfortable with it. Then do a completely fresh Install of 10 (using your existing Win10 Licence, if needed) on a new drive and reinstall your programs and data.

And yes, Win10 will be available for all your OS's running 7,8 and 8.1 that are capable of running Win10, Hardware dependent, so will exclude Win7 Mobile, Win8 RTM etc.
