Mercedes C180K rear pad replacement
« on: 15 June 2015, 11:07:38 »

My uncle knobhead has asked me if I will replace the front and rear brake pads on his Merc C180K, Iv said as long as he pays for the parts then no problem.... which he has done... :y

Im just thinking, do the rear calipers need a rewind tool...? or can I just use my trusty method of clamp and squeeze....?

If I need to buy the rewind tool thats not a problem I'll just get the cash off my Uncle for doing the job :)

I replaced the front discs about 18 months ago, but I advised him at the time to get new pads for it sooner rather than later... he'snow complained about the brake warning keeps flashing up on the dash....  :-X :-\ ::)

Matt, you may be lucky and just require a manual rewind tool. (eBay kits are £15-25 to cover most cars).

The problem is, if it's not a manual job (you'll need to google to confirm). Some modern cars require a computer to wind the calipers back, I jest you not. If it is one of these, be careful, as computer connected and ignition on lead to a flat battery. The default setting on the handbrake (via calipers) is ON. So battery goes flat, calipers clamp on to potentially nothing (discs & pads removed) and pop the piston out.

Probably depends how old the C180 is. A mid 90,s example should be straightforward. I dread to think of what the procedure might be on a current model.

Most Mercs have seperate handbrake in the form of brake shoes inside the rear disc/drum

The handbrake on his motor is initially foot operated and then has an electronic release on it...

I don't know what year it is as its on a private plate.... think its a 2002 model...?

Iv heard about needing a computer to connect to the car to rewind the pistons... thanks Dave :y

Just had a quick gander on here via google and it came up with this link : http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=90922

Seems the HB is manually adjustable so might just need a rewind tool for the caliper....

And to replace the rear pads is quite straightforward it seems :)

Well job done, was easy TBH - would've been easier if the correct front pads had been sent. The rears was very easy to do...

seems my uncle uses his brakes a little too much as the front discs where new about 2 years ago (I know, I fitted them) and they both need replacing because of very bad scoring on the insides of both of them....

Hope it passes its MoT today.... gonna need a bloody good clean before it does go, its like a ruddy automotive ashtray/wheely bin inside his car...

sorry I disagree  I think you are to blame
you never fit old pads to new discs its bad pratice[as you have now found out and your uncle is paying for the mistake] as they have worn to the old discs.

I should have said that I fitted new pads at the same time too...

I also fitted 2 new front springs, which was a pig of a job to do as the front springs on the C180K are oppsing huge...

I did replace the pads for him about a week after replaceing the discs and springs, my wife has just reminded me as she remembers it was a week after valentines day (did the discs and springs on valentines day, wife wasnt best pleased TBH) ...

Anyhoo, he needs the front discs replaceing now...

I know the handbrake shoes will be perfectly OK as he doesn't use it, just leaves the car in park. The handbrake is 1 of those foot operated jobs, he has a faulty left leg so tends not to use the handbrake...

On an Auto with a heavy right foot, discs tend to last around 15k anyway.  Shit discs, well, you can halve that!

Nothing unusual about changing discs every 18 months.
