Brake pipe to rear caliper solid - hot spanner?
« on: 23 July 2015, 18:46:40 »

Finally got round to the rear brakes on the MV6. Intention being to remove calipers and rebuild with fresh seals. Only problem is, pipe connected to the OS rear I solid as can be. Ive spent a whole day soaking it in Plusgas and still its going to round. Reckon if I take it to my tame mechanic the hot spanner will get them undone? I really don't want to have to replace the pipe, despite the pipe being in good nick, the unions at the flexi end are even worse.

Ive also tried the Halford freeze spray that has never failed before...

Have you got enough play to be able to cut it flush with the union and then fit a new one using a flaring tool, you`ll only lose about 20mm that way, then you can get a socket on it.

Brake pipes are cheap and easy. Once they get a bit grotty it's rare to get away with reusing them, so you might as well miss a step
Cut the pipe just above the fitting, remove the caliper  and undo the fitting with the caliper in a vice.

What I've been doing, is to heat up the nut with blowtorch, then add some WD-40 to it and wait for 15 minutes. Then use lockable pliers or plumber's heavy duty pliers and lock it really tightly to the nut. Then the nut should open easily, at least I never hadn't any problems with that method. :)

And when you are assembling the pipe back, remember to clean up the threads and add some grease to the threads, so you can open them easily on the next service. :)

I doubt there's that much excess pipe, its a fairly short run to the flexi...

Out of interest, how much is a proper oxyacetylene setup, assume a decent second hand one? Theres a few jobs I could do with it...
