Car for the Missus
« on: 24 July 2015, 16:12:30 »

I need to get my girlfriend an new car to replace the clapped out Citroen ZX she currently has. I spotted a lovely Golf but that has now gone and seen that the MG ZR`s are quite cheap.

It needs to be a hatch, 3 or 5 door, petrol and not too lethargic and reliable with a budget of around £1500.

Usual suspects are golf`s, Corsa`s and fiestas.

What do you lot recommend and what should I stay away from?

1.2 Corsa C would be my recommendation but then I am biased!

Yeah it`s the sensible choice for me because I`ve nearly always had Vauxhalls and I know my way round them. Golf`s are perceived as being reliable but cost more for similar age/mileage Corsa.

The fly in the ointment was THIS but I`ve no idea if they`re reliable or not, looks nice though  ;)

Yep, that's the one. £1500 should get an early, but tidy mk6 Fiesta. But if you can't find one for that, then a Corsa C is almost as good.

Don't buy an automatic, and ignore the automated-manual Corsa.

Get a Rover 25 instead; the same basic car, but actually has working suspension and comfortable seats.

I thought about the 25 but like the MG but SWMBO doesn`t so thats out anyway  :-\

After trawling through the trader she`s seen a nice little 1.4 Polo only 9 miles from here so I think we`ll be looking at that tomorrow even though it`s not as well spec`d as a Fiesta for less money  :-X

Personally for a cheap run around and easy maintenance I would stick with a Ford or Vauxhall, Golfs are good but parts aren't cheap.

There's loads of them Panda's on the road , the original
panda was a big hit and looks like these are too  :y
At least now they don't dissolve after a shower . Makes sense for a towny car
and quite a bit of room in em .

On the panda theme, Mrs 944 used to have a picanto. Great little car, 45-50mpg and dead easy to work on with surprisingly cheap bits
