The ignition lock on my recent purchase Omega was hard to get the key into, so yesterday I stripped and rebuilt it, as per Forum guide. It's a job I have done before successfully.
This time I stripped it down, and put all the components except the tiny springs in a jar of petrol and shook it up to clean them. On reassembly the brass slides were not as flush with the barrel as I expected with the key in, and the barrel would not go in the cylinder. I wondered why. I stripped it again and reassembled it again. Same problem. Eventually I removed the high slides and just left in the flush ones, put it back in the car, works fine now, even the spare key inserts easily.
What's going on? My theory is that I mixed up some slides with the same number, and when worn they are not interchangeable. Any more ideas?

The slides wear, easy enough to sort as you can dress the high bits with a file.

I agree.  You got them in the wrong order.  A new set of tumblers are only a few quid though.

Yup, sticky out tumblers are wrong tumblers, I left a few out without issue on an old one of mine

Depends how far they stick out, the worn ones tend to protrude a few tenths of a mm which is enough to cause issues.
