Are Omega instrument panels interchangeable?
« on: 02 August 2015, 09:40:18 »

My problem is my temperature etc. panel top left of main instruments has a curious light font so is not easily legible when the sun is shining - see recent thread. I have a stack of old instrument panels from scrapped cars in my garage, all looking similar. Are they interchangeable, between similar cars perhaps? Only obvious difference is the colour and locking method of the data panels.

PFL & MFL V6 are different to 4-pot PFL & MFL
FL V6 are different to FL 4-pot
Diesel are different to all

PFL - only if same engine and wheel size
MFL and FL - only if same engine type (eg, v6, TD, 4 pot petrol), rest reprogrammable

I found two old instrument panels which looked the same, similar connections, etc. Popped one in, initially everything worked, then after a short test drive I realised it was not giving me radio data. Bother. I guess I must put back the original panel.

This is a funny car. Even though all connectors on the instrument panel are the same, it is not interchangeable with others. This one has a white data box, labelled GM Siemens AP; all the rest are black, labelled GM Siemens BL. I have now replaced the original instrument panel, and everything now works again. Pic follows:

IIRC the radio data is selectable using Tech2. Alternatively it is easy enough to switch the text display from one instrument cluster to another.

Is this the same display as the bulbs issue?

If so, that display is specific to Ccrt headunits, which is why the replacement shows no radio data ;)

Yes, same display, head unit is CCRT 700 radio/tape/CD/phone unit with 6 CD magazine in the boot. Thanks Al, that explains everything. The bolder font on the standard display was more legible in bright sunlight, but I can make do with the lighter font. Sound quality is good, and CD player has a magazine random function, so not all bad.
