2.5 V6 petrol estate, bught in Clacton, came from Portugal. I am sorting this car, have drained the oil, cannot shift the oil filter cartridge. I am aware if I pull too hard it the whole thing will rotate. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Only just try to hold the main assembly and undo the cap.

Its likely the assembly will move, and thus will need removal and retightening.

Now I have broken it. Applied leverage to the central square socket, and the cap of the canister split. It is now leaking oil. Clearly I have to get the cap off off now - saw, drill, whatever - to get access to the haxagon that holds on the canitser to the crankcase. What is the best way of doing that?

As you have (now) found out, you shouldn't use a ratchet in the end of the cap, but a 24mm (from memory) socket on it.

How true. I had tried a 24mm socket, but it tended to come off the hexagon. 3/8" plug seeemed more secure! I did not foresee the risk of splitting the cap - silly me.

How do I best get that cap off to unscrew the 28mm nut to remove the filter canister? Car is above the pit, I have a power drill, also an airline saw I have never used with a very short blade. Pic follows.

You did the same as me and mine split , i just put a bit more leverage on the cap and it split enough to turn by hand . This is why i will never go back to these cartridge filters , too much faffing about . I did the spin on conversion and never looked back  :y
Use a chain or filter strap on the housing if its spinning.

The cap is knackered now and stealers wanted £35 ish for a new cap unless you can source a second hand one .

Thanks EMD, your post gave me hope. Sadly, mine would not turn in its damaged form. I attacked the cap with drill and saw, then hammer and chisel, and removed most of the cap and the filter. I can now feel the 27mm hexagon, but failed to turn it with he tools I have, strange because I did it 2 years ago when I changed an exhaust manifold. Tomorrow I shall seek a deep 27mm socket or a 2"" extension.

when i changed to spin on i kept the cartridge for a while (which never seized up despite useless national tyres) but no one seems to want them :(  i suppose anyone having to replace a broken cartridge unit will likely change to spin on.  have a look at the change guide http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90579.0 it will help you to remove the cartridge unit

Just in the last couple of hours had this myself, as suggested here.... (OK 24mm 6pt socket on 3ft breaker bar.)

Did the job great  :y

The filter was filthy, probably completely clogged. I wonder when it was last changed. I can imagine garages doing a service would change the oil and leave the filter if tricky to change, and this may have gone on for years.

Gentlemen, thanks for all help and advice. This forum is wonderful. Remains of cartridge removed, spin on pipe installed with filter. Pic follows.
I note the crank sensor is original, 15 years and 159000 miles. I wonder how much longer it will last?
