Unfortunately, some people run on ego and not facts or reality and are never wrong. If you've ever worked with somebody like this, it is a total nightmare, but a useful experience to make sure you never end up in the same position again. IME they never ever take responsibility for their actions it is always somebody else's or some circumstances that has caused the problem, the fault is never ever theirs. Because it is never their fault, there are no mistakes to learn from as in their mind they don't make any. We have a very good English word to describe them; fool and when they are in a position of responsibility they are normally a dangerous fool.

A piece of advice, never try to stop a fool being a fool, as you can't where they don't realise they are a fool as anybody that does will do something about it, as nobody likes being a fool. :(

They will obliviously set low dangerous standards for what they do and will always fail to even reach these minimums. Give them a wide berth. IME these people have very little skill or natural aptitude for the tasks they are attempting, not enough confidence to admit any mistakes so they only thing they have to fall back on is their massive egos and an African river: 'De Nile'.

This guy has backed down a lot since my mate mentioned me visiting his work.

Late last night I sent him a message saying, 'By your own admission, you don't have the knowledge or tools to work on cars. Please stop before you kill someone.' (The tool remark was in reference to him not owning a torque wrench, I own three 1/4,3/8 and 1/2 inch drive.) The reply was excellent, 'I have over 6k in tools'. To which I replied, 'Well at least you aren't denying the lack of knowledge'  ;D

I would have replied, 'All the gear and no idea', but a torque wrench is a basic tool for most hobbists, let alone people in a business environment.

The same phrase I use for car restoration / maintenance applies here "it's not how much you spend, it's how smart you spend"

If your mate paid for the work I think it would come under the jurisdiction of the TSA, but unless he has a written quote and/or receipt such an avenue could be tricky.

At the end of the day I would report him to the authorities regardless so that he is on their radar at the very least.  Down he line when it happens again it all helps to build a case and to (hopefully) stop him from hurting somebody or worse.
