Plips / Fobs / Remotes and their programming...
« on: 01 October 2015, 10:27:29 »

Here's one for The Boy or Mark DTM, and several other, too, I'm sure.

In order to programme a separate remote fob, the PFL type, not MFL-onwards, non-IR type... can you 'clone' an existing fob, or do you need the car there? Or, to put it another way, can you do a fob reprogramming via post?

I suspect 'no' but just checking  :)

The fob isn't programmable, so you program the car to the fob. Which requires access to the car.

Thanks Nick. That suggests that a second hand fob can't be, therefore, reprogrammed, yes? Not unless you had two fobs, from the same scrap car, which you then reprogramme your own car to match these.  :-\

I've got a couple of mint-looking fobs ordered for not much £. These, if nothing else, their externals are a massive upgrade for my own worn 19-yr old fob.

DBG .. if memory serves the reprogramming is done with the key in the ignition .. now I'm not sure which "bit" gets the work done on it .. maybe both .. but the key is certainly "IN" the car when done ... so the "by post" option would appear to be out (unless your postman can lift an omega and your recipient has a HUGE letterbox !  :) )

Ahh, not to worry. As said, I've got a couple of plips coming, I was going to go down to see Mark at some point, but the only weekend I was free was about the only one he couldn't do, that's  the way sometimes. Or he just really doesn't want to see me  :D

At least me now having these fobs means there's even more reason to get my old lady Tech 2'd, got a list of tings I'd like doing. Worth doing in the one trip, so all good  :y

2nd hand fobs are fine (if right frequency/model).

All fobs are (almost) unique, the car is programmed to recognise the fob.

The car is also programmed to transponder, although if its been anywhere near that POS frequently called "My Naff Code Reader", you can't reuse.

You you get a pfl car which had a separate blooper to work with a mfl all in one key?

(Say if you were an idiot who lost his keys but has the gear off a later car)

To answer that, you could (TB please correct me if I'm wrong) just move the Central Locking ECU/brain and all the gubbins from the FL car over to the PF. Then use the keys off that same FL and you're good to go. The transponder etc doesn't know what car it's in per se. You could fit the immobiliser to a Viva if you wanted, so long as the fob matches the ring round the ignition etc, then you're fine.

I keep flirting with the idea of fitting a FL CL setup to my PFL, to gain an all-in-1 key, but haven't looked into is as yet.  :)

Ah! Well I've got it started with the mfl main ecu and ring, but where is the alarm ecu then? :)

As TB says, you'll be fine. Mine's a P, and isn't IR. To be doubly-doubly sure, look next to the sunroof switch, if there's a small black dome, then it's got IR CL.  :y

Generally, only M and N reg, but some P's might have been stuck in dealers for a while before registering.
