gets even odder.  on both my migs the range indicator was spot on - when it said one mile you had one mile.  tested it twice on the old one and once on this one.  only thing it was ever wrong about was if you went to zero then added a few litres, as you do doing a test.  it keeps saying zero until you put a lot in, which is a test of your nerve. 

if the engine was seized it would not have turned over on the old starter.  any garage would know that, even a piss poor one. it would be hard to cause an engine to seize by (very badly) fitting a new starter.  not impossible i suppose....
