3.2 starter not working , before i change it whats the best way to check for a bad earth

Connect another temporary one using a heavy duty jump lead  ;)  If it works replace earth lead.

do you mean the main engine to chassis earth lead

You need a good connection between negative battery post to engine block. If in doubt connect a stout jump lead from negative post to block to check.
It could be a dead battery. It might be failed switch to solenoid, can be checked by shoving needle through the lead and measuring voltage. Almost certainly it's a failed starter. Obtain good one and fit following the guide. Mention it on this forum, someone may have one, otherwise Steve Brown at omegaspareparts, if all else fails Vauxhall.
