Have you read How to check the autobox fluid level?

It isn't going to be too high & if someone has tried to check it without the engine running it will be too low.

Yep, check the fluid level (on the flat, with engine running) and condition soonest. If the fluid is black, smells burnt, or the level is significantly above normal, the fluid needs changing (it expands as it ages). Drop both the gearbox sumps to drain the fluid and check for debris in the sumps while you're at it.

Don't forget to remove and clean the little magnet that WILL be covered in a grey sludgey crap...

I did mine about 2 weeks ago, the oil that cam out was very very black and smelly, the stuff thats in now is very very red - but still stinks LOL
