When I lived in Liverpool, my mate got a letter from Royal Mail saying ' Put the dog in the house or collect your Giro from the sorting office'. No argument, that's it.

Fixed that for you Steve  ;D

Giro?There's a blast from the past.  ;D
The last time I was on the dole, I remember my giro being £9 for the week. I got by on it too.

That was before the sub postoffice owners realised that putting a lotto machine and sell fags in meant they go it all back before the person on the rock'n'roll left the building.

My wage with post office telephones (GPO) was 7 guineas a week as a TTA. That £7 7s 0d for the youngsters. After tax I used to pick up (by giro, through the post) £6 18s 6d, I gave my mum £3 and the remainder was mine.....all mine.

Back in the seventies, my boss was an ex postman. used to work out of Burton on Trent. He had some fantastic tales of him delivering by red GPO motorbike. Two were:

A dressed fresh chicken(not in a bag in those days) with address label tied around its legs, fell off rear pannier going over the Burton bridge. He stopped and went back for it only to see it flattened by a passing wagon. Undettered her posted it through the letterbox.

Another was a late addition to his load. A carton of fresh cream. The guy lobbed it out of the sorting office window and he fumbled it. Lid came off and he scooped up the contents and some leaves and put the lid back on.

On the first occasion the head postmaster was waiting for him on his return.

We went through a phase of all the mail being delivered to the wrong house numbers in our road, we would spend ages knocking on each others doors correcting the mistakes, in the end one of the Neighbors said enough is enough, Im going to complain about the Postman and duly did.

About a week later I got a knock on the door in the early morning, and theres the Postman, expecting him to ask me to sign for something, He didn't, he just said "You complained about me, Im on a frecking warning now, its all rubbish, I always deliver the right mail correctly, why did you report me and do that?", I replied "actually it wasn't me, it was the Lady in 24 three houses down".  :D   ;D
