Intel P4s are generally bomb proof.  More likely mobo, esp as most from P4 era will be lead free.

Deffo agree...

I've not come across a dead P4 cpu yet...

See a dead motherboard every other week at work! (based on a couple of pc's booked in a day)

If you have no beeps the BIOS isn't booting. Or you have disconnected the speaker...  :) The BIOS will beep with just the mobo, cpu and power.

In my experience, your problem can be due to a faulty cpu/card/mem chip/allsorts. The starting point is to remove everything except the cpu (including mouse, keybord) and try booting. If still no beep code the mobo is the most likely candidate. I would have gone for PSU as no. 1 but you have changed that.

If you get a beep code, add stuff back one bit at a time till it stops - there's the culprit.

If you don't get a beep code then it's BIOS/mobo/cpu/speaker cable in that order.

If it really did go POP! then it's the PSU.

All of the above assumes that you haven't lost faith and decided to get a nice fast new PC anyway. In which case the current system is trashed beyond redemption...  :) :) :)

I must admit, having extensively used an imac (why the break cant you connect the mouse to the USB ports on the keyboard without tripping the poly fuse!), iPhone and various other MAC products, they are a bit niche. They are excellent for some apps but, not ideal for a general purpose home machine from a support, serviceability and price perspective.

My home machine (touch wood) is now 4 years old and has never missed a beat, so it does show that good hardware which is well setup can be very stable even on windoze...

sounds like a faulty mouse or one with too high a current draw.

says he with mouse plugged in to keyboard.....
