I'm wondering whether to take the ECU out, and looking at some posts on here it looks like I have to take the whole ABS pump out too? Plus move and empty the PAS reservoir?

That means disconnecting all the brake pipes and a hell of mess, yes?

Or can I just get the ECU off without the pump?

Apparently. But I wouldn't do it even though your hands look like you've been wrestling tigers after removing the entire unit.

Breaking a car.

Remove battery, then unplug the main loom connectors under the battery tray, or if you breaking the car, cut / hacksaw them off. Now you got more room to get to the ABS Unit, loosen off the two nuts either side of the main ABS unit, 10,12 or 13 mm spanner, cant remember, one of the nuts has to totally come off, the other can be loosened, as its on a hinge type clip, now push the ABS unit away from you / towards the passenger side (dont worry about the brake pipes), you should now have enough room to slide the mauve locking clip and unplug the connector and remove the ABS ECU away from the ABS Unit. 

Cant remember having to take the PS Pump off for this job, but I may have already done that. 

10 min job, once youve enough space to work around the ABS Unit.

As Zirk says, you may as well removed the whole unit with the pump if you'e breaking the car, sawing through the brake pipes. Otherwise, after removing the battery and the power steering fluid reservoir,  unclipping the hoses from the bulkhead, loosening the outer nut, removing the inner nut and bending back the heatshield, you can grasp the whole ABS assembly and heave it up enough to unclip the cables and undo the 4 torx screws holding ECU to pump.

Thanks Rob, I stand corrected. This pic shows 4 of them, the nut removed, and the heatshield bent back.

Looms are useful. If everything on the car was working, remove the loom complete first without cutting/breaking anything.

If you've already cut it, then you might as well chop it up as it's scrap.

It's way too hot out there to tackle this. I'm hoping to take bits off that are worthwhile without a huge amount of work and then either scrap it or give the car to another omega owner for more major spares.
