AR35 Autobox woes...
« on: 09 July 2016, 16:17:22 »

Hello all,

I've realised I've not got enough posts to post in the items wanted, and this does include an item wanted. But first, I'll check I've not missed anything daft:

Gearbox was playing up 2/3 change, slipping a bit, not seeming to engage. So I replaced the solenoid. Changed filter.

Took it for a spin, seemed ok. But couldn't really test it properly under the conditions it would slip (hard acceleration in a 60/70 limit)

Went out last night, gave it a bit of a caning, changed from 2/3, slips like buggery. From then on, I have only 1st pulling correctly, 2 and 3 slip, can even get to 4th.

So I put it up on the ramp. Check the fluid. Bit low. Top it up, off the ramp, test drive. Still slips.

So I get it back on the ramp, drop the trans fluid out, change the filter and solenoid BACK to the originals in case it's them at fault, fluid back in, text drive. Still knackered.

I now think the box was already on it's way out and I've just finished it off. There was a lot of metallic paste on the sump magnet when I first drained it, then today there was more, so I suspect something has just worn away. I suspect brake bands. But not being an expert I dunno.

So, has anyone got a known to be good AR35 box I can buy off them? I really want to keep this car, it has LPG and gets me to work and back.

I saw Shackeng was asking about one, but may have got one from Sarek, and tigers_gonads said he had one. I'm hoping he might still have it and be willing to sell it to me!

Any advice and help will be gratefully received.

TIA

Tim

I filled it, warmed it up, went through all the selector positions, then undid the fill plug and topped it up until it dribbled out.

Then I took it for a quick spin, whacked it back on the ramp and checked it again.

Gawsh that drain bolt gets hot!

Yeah, yesterday I didn't, and when I rechecked it, it was low.

Today I did it with the engine running.

Okay bud because the box needs the engine running to spin the torque convertor whilst filling or it drains back to the sump and you end up about 1.5 ltrs short  ;)

Chris (shackeng) has first dibs on the box.
If he doesn't want it, we will talk money  :)

I think that's what happened yesterday. And why it was a bit low this morning. I stupidly filled it with the engine off. It had been a long day as my brother (who's ramp I was using) was meant to be helping me, but he had a couple of other urgent jobs to do on customer's cars, so left me to it. My missus is away for the week, and I was running really late, had to get home, get the dinner and get my daughter to guide camp, so I was rushed and forgot I needed the engine running when filling. I knew that too! Then it worked fine on the way home so I thought I was ok.

I wonder if I possibly finished the box off running it a bit low last night. Every other box I've had that's been low won't go into gear well, usually a delay. Never had one slip like that before.

It's certainly full now, as with it running I couldn't get anymore in.

Yes, Chris most certainly does have first dibs. But if he doesn't want it, I'd love to take it off your hands.

Thanks for the advice mate.

Ok, cool mate.

I want to get it sorted as soon as possible as I need the car for work, but if I have to wait to source one, then that's what I'll do. I can get by for a bit. To be honest, I need my brother's help to fit this one evening, and between my work and home commitments and his, I doubt we'd be able to manage it this week anyway. And I'm sick of the sight of that damn car having spent a day and a half working on it for no good end result!

If we do end up doing a deal, would you be willing to stick it on a pallet so I can get a courier or something to pick it up?

I'm not sure the best way of transporting something as big as this?

I'm assuming you are a fair distance away from me (I'm in Reading, Berkshire) and as my Omega is my workhorse, I won't have a suitable vehicle to pick it up.

Gearbox all sorted, put one in from a 3.2 a guy sold me in Poole, seems to work well. My old one had an annoying whine, which has now also disappeared with the new box.
