man jumps 25,000 ft without a parachute
« on: 31 July 2016, 10:22:04 »

Worth watching on TV/Internet if you haven't seen it.

He has done a staggering amount of parachute jumps too. More than 18,000.

I wonder what he does for kicks.

Actually, maybe I have some pathalogical lack of ambition or adventure, but why would anyone want to do that ?  ???

Ah, hang on he's American. That explains it  ;)

I've heard there are much more dangerous pastimes, like extolling the virtues of the SIL to Mrs M'lud, M'lud Bobbit ::) ::) ::) :o :o :o

It raises some interesting thoughts.

How did they know the net (and its safety net underneath) would arrest the chap without allowing him to hit the ground or break through.? I suggested to Mrs V that perhaps they dropped a pig out first of similar weight to see what happened but she discounted that as it wouldnn't have the sense to steer its self into the net

A more sober thought is that someone will become the first person in history to die jumping without a chute and missing the net.

On average about 64 people die every year skydiving, is it really any different if they choose to do so with a parachute or into a net? (Source: http://www.dropzone.com/fatalities/)

That's a lot less than die on the roads in a single country, let alone worldwide.

On the other hand you couldn't pay me enough to do it - with or without a parachute!

Re the net - I assume they knew the breaking strain of each individual strand, therefore the breaking strain of the entire net.  It seemed to be held up by some kind of arrestor mechanism at each corner which will have allowed the net to pull down at a specific rate (likely not a linear rate) that they calculated would decelerate him slowly enough so as not to liquidise his internal organs.. simple physics assuming you know the variables (speed, weight, maximum deceleration a human body can withstand, breaking strain of all cables & cords etc)

Also let no-one fall (no pun intended) into the trap that as an object falls it gets faster, and faster, and faster, and faster... which isnt the case. Terminal velocity. Which is, for a human, without any special streamlined gear on, something like 70mph. (I could nip on wikipedia and find out the exact amount, quote it, and make out like I knew it off by heart anyway - but I'm sure no-one on internet forums ever does that  :D) anyway, its the same as that myth that if you drop a dime off the Empire State, by the time it reaches the bottom it'll split your head open... nah. If you drop a coin from 6 foot above someone's head it'll hurt as much/little as if you drop it from 10 miles up.  :y

So our skydiving chappy will be falling at the same speed from 25,000ft up as if he's dived from 1,000ft. I forget my school physics about acceleration and metres per second per second, but anyway, still a brave, mad, and record-breaking admirable lunatic!  :)

In stable, belly-to-earth position, terminal velocity is about 200 km/h (120 mph). Stable freefall head down position has a terminal speed of 240–290 km/h (around 150–180 mph). Further minimization of drag by streamlining the body allows for speeds in the vicinity of 480 km/h (300 mph).

I went to Wikipedia for you ;D
