Solid fuel Raeburn? Bet that keeps you busy! We were going to install at least one log-burner, but seeing as we're selling up shortly, seems like a poor investment!
Actually yes. Very much so. And although posh people insist that they simply couldn't possibly live without an Aga dwaaarling, and it simply does everything (Posh people always have Agas not Raeburns), they are actaully quite expensive to run and take effort. But as it heats the water and a large part of the house it works for us. When we first moved in the gas+electric bill was terrifying
We prefer to buy solid fuel when and as we need it, it avoids that megabill every 3 months.
My brother has a Raeburn (I always thought it was spelt rayburn!) but its oil fired (no gas where he lives) .... he used to let it do the hot water and central heating. He lives in an old big 5 bed farmhouse, that has solid walls....it used to cost him about £1000 every 3 months for the oil. A few years ago he struggled to get a delivery of oil (snow/frost on the local roads meant oil companies wouldn't come out) and worried the oil was going to run out he turned the heating off (so only the Raeburn and hot water was using the oil) and went out and bought 6 or so oil filled electric radiators. With those and the two open fireplaces he has it was sufficient to keep the place warm.
He has found it cheaper to use the electric oil rads than let the Raeburn do the heating

Myself, I've had the heating on for the last few weeks....(its now, this week, on the timer....so on twice a day now, as appose to just the evening). My energy company has just reduced my monthly DD down to £39/month from £50 for both gaz and leccy! I am on an amazing fixed price deal from them, that ends March 2007

Even tho I got them to transfer £200 at the beginning of the year back into my bank account....im now just over £200 credit with them.....so I don't worry about how much gas I use....esp as I'm due a £140 payment from the gov on the 'Warm Home' scheme paid to my energy supplier
