Might I suggest a good dose of switch cleaner on the volume control of the amplifier before you spend too much money? Then work the cleaner in by operating the volume control from end to end (power off!) several times.
If that works, it will be a short term cure until you can replkace the volume control itself.

Thanks ron , yes i have some switch cleaner so will try that first and report back . Didn realise you could replace the control unit , does that have to be soldered in ?

Yes, soldering required! Does that frighten you? The volume control is usually connected to the printed circuit by wires, so fairl easy, but may sometimes be mounted directly on to the circuit board directly - still not difficult.

These may help:-

Ive always rated Missions myself.

Some of the Classics, - Mission, Kef. B&W, Q Acoustics, Quad, Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, Tannoy, to name a few.

For HiFi, stay away from Bose and anything made in the Far East.

Yes i was looking at Mission  :y I will cross off Bose then as i was just looking at those .

I have a pair of Mission 733i floor standers and think they`re great, really good neutral sound to them, perfect partner to my Cyrus Straightline amp 8)

I've got a gorgeous pair of Mission 734's sat at the back of the living room which need 1 (or knowing I should change in pairs, 2) main drivers  ;)
Gav if you feel the need for a change, give us first dabs on them please mate  :)
I'd love to get them running with my Cyrus 2 again  :)

I've been running a pair of Mission M74's for a few years now.
There nice but never a patch on the 734's  :'(

Steve (EMD)
I've been running Mission speakers since 1984 when I bought a pair of 1st gen Mission 70's.
As Gav says, match them with the right amp and source and you will be pushed to get a more clean and detailed sound at any price imo  :y

My music setup is currently a Mission pcm 700 CD player / Pioneer mini disc player for source.
Cyrus 2 amp and M74 speakers.

AV is Yamaha DSP amp
Mission 760's for front left and right.
Mission 75 C centre speaker and my first purchased 70's at the rear.

As you can probably see, I love Mission / Cyrus stuff  ;D

Can`t see myself changing them anytime soon Steve, next on the wish list is a Cyrus CD player to compliment my amp  :y

Thought you might say that  ::) ;D
Spares are like rocking horse shite nowdays  :(
Been a cheeky bastid and all that, thought I'd try it on  ;D ;D
Good luck with the CD hunt  :y
Which amp you got ?

That`s the trouble with owning some older stuff, spares can become a problem.

The amp is a Cyrus Staightline, it only has input and volume controls, no option to change bass and treble and gives a wonderful neutral sound so you hear the music as it was recorded.
New Cyrus CD players are expensive and also not available in black so won`t match my amp so I might look at second hand stuff next year, I`d also like a Cyrus AV amp but that`s just a pipe dream at the moment  ;D

Anyway Steve no harm in asking  :y

Sounds like its the replacement for my Cyrus 2 but without the phono pre amp  :)

I know what you mean about the Mission AV amp  :(
Bloody expensive and then you have to purchase a bunch of power amps too  :(

I don't spend the time in front of my speakers that I used to do sadly  :(  so my little lot will have to make do  ;)

The cure will not last forever; the control will need to be replaced. Did you note the details on the Potentiometer - value, Part No. etc?
The Akai Part No. is listed in the PDF manual I linked you to, along with the volume control PCB layout - Page 24, bottom right hand corner.

I'm glad you've got your music back!
Manual, Page 14:-

8. VOLUME P.C. BOARD

Ref. No.     Part No.         Description

VR101       EV-383734J     VR SPL RK16Y12MAK104X2
                                    [VOLUME]

I cannot find the actual resistance value of the volume control anywhere, but it ought to be marked on the control itself, and will almost certainly be a logarithmic-law potentiometer.

Found it!
Tucked away, not in the main cirduit diagram but a subsidiary one - twin gang 100kilohm potentiometer. It didn't specify logarithmic, but as your ears are logaarithmis, it must be!

If the crackling has returned, your volume control is probably beyond help and you need to source a replacement; the motorising bit is irrelevant, as it's just an add-on, yes?
I think the Dropbox version of that manual has parts missing, but I was unable to send the full PDF on here. Go to Akai-AM-M459-Service-Manual.pdf - Adobe Reader. All of those dashes may not be needed, but Google will find it!
It's worth trying eBay, etc., for a generic control as Akai won't be the manufacturer but will want a second mortgage for a replacement.

I'll do my best for you, but it would help if you could photograph the control to give me some idea of its physical size and shape, etc. Inclde a small rule in the picture, if possible?
