v6 Crankshaft Sensor
« on: 22 November 2016, 20:52:22 »

Evening All,

When repalcing a crank sensor is it advised to go to main dealer or will a pattern part do? Is it still available to order from Vauxhall anymore?

Cheers

Joel

Crank sensor is one of the few parts that is essential to buy from a dealer. That applies to all cars, not just Omegas.

Be aware that there were two types, with the difference being the shape of the electrical plug so ensure you get the correct one and yes buy from a Vx dealership.

As above, only ever buy over the counter at an actual VX dealer that you have actually had to go to to order/buy/collect from. ;)

I bow to Forum wisdom on this matter, though before I knew better I bought an e-bay crank sensor for my 3.2 in 2011 and it's still performing well 5 years and 23K miles later. 2.5s seem particularly sensitive to crank sensors, I have changed them on all 4 2.5s I have owned.

Yes, it seems that some aftermarket ones work fine, and some break as soon as they're fitted. Hence the advice I presume. :y

Vauxhall do not make the sensors, they are manufactured by other companies such as VDO and Delphi. You can go to a decent motor factors and obtain a branded sensor which is cheaper in price but not in quality. I personally have used branded Cam, Crank and air flow sensors with no problems.

What made me decide not to get them from a main dealer is that I purchases one for my Carlton, and the invoice had an asterisk next to it with a note saying that it might not be of GM origin but still charged the normal price.

I definitely would not buy one from eBay.

Good point, I remember being in an exhaust centre years ago, and in walked a mechanic I knew from the Jaguar garage to pick up a "Jaguar exhaust system" which was no doubt charged as OE.

Yes they are bought it from OEMs. What you can't guarantee is that the Bosch aftermarket part is identical to the Bosch GM part, as GM may have agreements in place to prevent that.  I addition, they is a LOT of fake shite out there in the factors channel - look at what the likes of ECP sell ;)

Given our collective experiences here, the non GM ones or the alledged GM ones from alternative sources, are very, very frequently troublesome.  Hence, buy a GM one from a real GM dealer.
