Exhaust
« on: 14 December 2016, 16:45:00 »

I've been changing the exhaust on my 2.2 (did my old 2.6 MV6 - seemed much easier).  I'm also in the process of replacing the front pipe and cat (I've read about sticking with genuine but I need car back on the road asap and I've retained the old one to perhaps drop round the Marks DTM to get it refurbed  ;) )

Anyway, took the heatshield off the manifold and was presented with the image below - this looks like a crack to me however there wasn't any 'soot' on the back of the heatshield.

I've noticed that the car doesn't seem to have much low end 'grunt', well less than expected but maybe I've been spoiled from my old S-Type.  Is this a possible symptom or is it just that this is a characteristic of the 2.2 petrol?  Was trying to go for Jame's Omega but wifey put her foot down even though I said she could have the equivalent spend in jewellery  ;D

Can't comment on low end "grunt" of a 4 pot as I've never had one. However that looks like a crack to me too,you should be able to hear a noise from it particularly from a cold start, any noise would probably quieten as the heat expansion "closes" the crack up.

Most 4 cylinder Omegas go that way eventually, in my experience did not affect performance. From all I read, replacement is the only remedy, but the spitting noise when cold becomes much quieter when warm, and quite tolerable. It does not cause MOT failure, so is best ignored.

More serious is the cracking of the exhaust flexi sections on 4 pot Omegas, which can cause MOT emission failures due to air being sucked in.

Started car up after getting everything connected - could see crack in Manifold visibly 'spitting' but more disturbing, the car sounded like a tractor!!   :o

Did a quick check of all the joints and they feel air tight apart from where the down pipe connects to the manifold.  I'd forgotten to purchase a replacement and thought I could get away with using the old one - clearly not  :(  They seem to be very rare as I've had to order one from Vauxhall main dealer.  I'll sort the manifold out after xmas so I shall be after hints & tips on how to remove the manifold without breaking studs  ;D
