Creak/Knock on braking, bad on full lock
« on: 14 February 2017, 21:52:25 »

My 2.6 Elite has a funny noise.

Braking (steering at any angle) once the braking force has been applied for a little while, if it's firm braking, you will hear a sort of "knock" or creak noise as a one off

If you steer on a full right lock (or a significant amount of right steering) and brake, there's a "knock knock knock" coming from the right. It's loud.

Steering box doesn't appear loose and the bushes and joints all appear free from play both loaded and unloaded.

Any ideas? Top mounts have crossed my mind, not sure how to test them. I can see when I turn the wheels with the bonnet up, they move about a bit, but I don't know much of this is normal.

Any ideas? It isn't linked to roadspeed and nothing is fouling that I can tell. Sadly my knowledge of suspension fault finding is only basic.

Hoping the MOT will pick it up :y

An obvious knock I see a lot of are arb links. Grab the roll bar just before the link and tug on it up n down and if there is play you should feel it.

When I had an ARB link fail it was silent on a smooth surface but sounded like a castanet over a rough surface. Braking and cornering had no effect.

My money is on the wishbone bushes as the primary suspect.

Creaking... suggest Wishbone bush/ top mount/ ARB tracking side to side within it's subframe bushes.

Knocking... without hearing it very hard to say.

Checked your wheel bearings are healthy?

Easy way to check for roll bar links is to rock the car by pushing and pulling at the side above door frame. This loads them up at their extremes and when worn will be noticeably knocking

Sounds worth a try. I have had similar front end knocks and have changed wishbones and anti-roll bar bushes to no avail, only to find when I change the anti-roll bar bushes the knock disappears.

Roll bar links are normally under strain when cornering and only rattle when driving straight, IME.
