Warning note to E39ists...

The front lower arm bolts through an insert. Brute force and heat produced this result...

http://share.photobucket.com/shareprofile/indexshare.php?id=NTcxMTY=

Assuming that I can successfully liberate the insert, I suspect that it's not designed to be removed from the hub carrier and should therefore be binned rather than refitted... Thoughts :-\

More worryingly, I discovered this notch caused by the arch liner rubbing... :o

Which is why I started on this side rather than the one that was actually worn... ::)

Yes, that doesn't look good, on both counts.  :-\

Omegas are quite good, you know. You should try one... ;)

Is it a cast ali knuckle, then? Guessing so, if it needs an insert.

I wonder if putting the knuckle in the oven, insert in the freezer, smear of threadlock on it and knock it back in will work? :y

If you can get the ball joint separated from it, of course.

Worth putting a big washer on the back just in case the answer's no....

Balljoint now Donald and insert still very much welded to the shaft. Refitting the old arm is a lottery that I won't be buying a ticket for.

That said, the insert if fitted from above with the nut and washer underneath... Would keep it mobile until new hub carrier arrives :-\

This is one reason why the two hammer method of breaking baljoints should be used whenever possible. You need to shock tapers apart rather than force them

Not saying you're wrong... as you're older and wiser than I.. but I've never had any luck with impact removal of tapers. I always have to use the ball joint splitter type devices  :(  Or "drift" the clamp apart.
