High coolant pressure perhaps
« on: 04 April 2017, 09:09:49 »

How hard should the coolant hoses (i.e. top rad hose) feel on a V6, when on normal temp (~95°C)? What is the V6 coolant system normal operating pressure?

It's normal to have some pressure, but I have a feeling that I have too much coolant pressure - when I squeeze top or bottom coolant hose (when engine is hot), they feel quite hard.

No overheating - usually runs around 92°C. Even when it gets to 98°C, fans kick in and bring it down in under a minute.
No noticable loss of coolant.

There was always noticable coolant pressure, but I'm under impression that there is more now than there was before - or I'm just being paranoid?

Check the seal on the coolant bottle.

When they get worn, they can let air in as the engine cools then when the engine gets hot again, this can give the same symptoms that you have  ;)

If you have a known good one off another car, swap it over to try  :)

Just to illustrate - when hot, hoses are hard as shown in this clip (from 4:58).
So I'd say it's running at 1 bar (~15 psi) pressure. Is that OK?

BTW - there is no hissing from the closed expansion tank, nor there was ever overflowing or anything.

That's what they are meant to do!

I would be more concerned if the hoses did not get harder as that would mean its losing pressure from somewhere.

If its not over heating and not losing water then I would not worry about it.

The pressure raises the coolant boiling point so its better to have some than none.
